Umeh’s subject revolves around tradition and culture. The painting shows a drummer boy in an awkward position.  The canvas is worked on with articulated brisk strokes as the artist tries to isolate his primary subject from the group of drummers seen in the background.  The talking drum seen in this painting is common in West Africa and used by griots. The talking drum – the gangan or dundun in Yoruba is often used as a praise-singing instrument in contemporary times especially in weddings and similar ceremonies.
