Training session at OSKBC gym. A coach padding a kid boxer nicknamed “Tyson”.

Boxing is not a common sport in Nigeria, and boxing gyms are really not a common sight, but what’s more uncommon are kid boxers. “Kid Gloves” focuses on kids training to become boxers.Whether they are training to go pro or just for self-defence, these kids do not punch with kid gloves, rather they train and fight like the pound for pound professional boxers, losing all signs of innocence, and transforming into anybody’s image of a true fighter.

Growing up in an area like Agege, where brawling is not uncommon and is rather seen as a leisure activity, to be indulged in whenever one catches the urge, it would not hurt a bit to have some self-defense skills up your sleeves, not so they can go digging up trouble as some would argue, but to at least defend one’s self and save ones face when faced with no other choice. They take the pains, the losses, the injuries, the muscle aches, the swollen faces together with the victories, the applause and the teachings, and try to forge themselves into formidable fighters.
