Draughtsman Printmaker and Sculptor, Henri Matisse was born the 31st of December 1869 in Northern France. He was originally trained as a lawyer but fell in love with Art in 1889 while recuperating from appendicitis.
Matisse was known for his use of colour and was a founding member of Fauvism (les fauves, French for the Beasts).
In 1941, Matisse was diagnosed with cancer and was confined to a wheelchair after surgery. Due to his sickness, he had trouble drawing and painting but his creativity could not be dampened for long and with the help of his new assistant Lydia Delectorskaya he discovered cutouts and created art with it. He named this “Painting with scissors’.

A pioneer in modern art with a career that spanned about 6 decades Matisse, a lifelong friend of Pablo Picasso, died of a heart attack at the age of 84 in 1954.
Painting with scissors also known, as Paper Art or Cut out has become a craft phenomenon in recent times. This craft can be seen in graphic design with regards to Poster designs, Magazine covers, Illustration and Stationary.
Whilst there are many artists/designers that use this medium, there are 3 artists that are exceptionally good with regards to this style. They are Petra Borner, Yulia Broadskaya and the dynamic duo Zim & Zou

Petra Borner

Petra Borner is a Swedish born London based mixed media Illustrator. She is known for her bold use of colours as well as her intricate paper cut designs.

Yulia Broadskaya

Named the “breakthrough star” of 2009 by Creative Review magazine, Yulia Broadskaya, a Moscow born UK based illustrator changed the game with her paper art. Using a method called quilling, she challenged the status quo by using the technique in Graphic design. Her works range from Typography to illustration and even portraiture. Quilling is an old technique but thanks to Yulia Broadskaya there’s been a re-emergence, which has made a way for Crafts to be merged with Graphic design.
