The Launch of the Street Economy exhibition marks a new foray for Abuja into serious art. At about 6 pm on the 13th of October, 2017, the National Exhibition Pavilion, ICC, Abuja began getting filled with visitors from the Czech Republic, and art enthusiasts from all across Nigeria to see the results of the exhibition titled “Street Economy”. Unknown to many, this event would set the stage for a young Nigerian documentary photographer; Abayomi Akande to make his debut in an Abuja art exhibition. Leveraging on his recent forays within Nigeria and the Czech Republic, Abayomi has taken advantage of the exposure to organise a 2-day art exhibition.
The exhibition was curated by the “Pretty. Ugly. Things” contemporary studio, and features a display of images, street photography stills taken from bustling streets, of Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kaduna and The Czech Republic. It also features the vendors and everyday hustlers at their different places of work, selling their wares of choice. Captioned remarkably, and with wittiness by the “Pretty. Ugly. Things” Studio. Some of the images on display at the exhibition include images of a bòlé (roasted plantain) seller, street hawkers and other commerce activities known to take place on the roads of Nigeria.
Mr Pavel Mike (H.E), the ambassador of the Czech Republic to Nigeria gave the opening remarks of the exhibition. In attendance were Chezckslovakians and Nigerians alike who were treated to a vast array of sumptuous dishes in a serene and tranquil environment.

Addressing the attendees, Abayomi emphasized that his work is inspired by the streets during his travels, and the common man’s experience. Many of his shots are reminiscent of “World Press Photo” Winner, Akinleye’s earlier work whose images remain relevant and iconic, by reflecting reality, but through a respectful and not, protective or distorted foreign gaze.

The photographer, Abayomi Akande was appreciative of the new efforts to promote photography beyond Lagos, the African pop culture hub. The exhibition ran for two days. From October 13th to 14th 2017. Catch up with the photographer on Instagram (@fotovangelist), where he updates images frequently.
