As part of activities to celebrate the end of its last session of the year and the end of exams, Alliance Francaise, Yaba recently hosted members of the French community and the general public to a photography exhibition titled Extended View/Plan Large.

Featuring seventeen images taken by photographer Boomy Tii, Extended View/Plan Large addresses a multiplicity of themes ranging from fecundity to forlornness. The images in the collection were taken between 2013 and 2017, across an assortment of locations – locations as varied and dissimilar as Lagos and Zamfara.
Boomy Tii, born Bunmi Tiamiyu, explains that the exhibition’s theme is based on her belief that “well-captured images not only represent the moments they were captured but also provide a candid depiction of the photographer’s perception of those moments”. The graduate of French confesses that her preference for landscape photography is inspired by her fascination with her “immediate environment and the beauty of nature, people, culture and everyday activities”.

The photographer, who describes herself as an “enigmatic wanderer,” adds, “I have always been fascinated by life itself: people; nature and everything around me; that is why I major in landscape photography. I am fascinated by nature and it features heavily in my work.” Even though her first exhibition features landscape images, the photographer, however, refuses to be pigeonholed in the genre – as she also engages in fashion photography and leather crafting.
Extended View/Plan Large includes both monochrome and polychrome images that offer deeper perspectives on what would otherwise be regarded as commonplace incidents. Boomy Tii uses an abundance of hues as well as animate and inanimate characters to illustrate subjects such as tomato scarcity and death: images such as “Appreciation” and “Grateful” feature bright red tomatoes accentuated by black and white backdrops and hint at the worth of tomatoes in a time of scarcity; while “Adieu” depicts a fallen tree whose colourful leaves used to serve as a haven for people seeking shelter from the sun.
