Umeh’s subject is predominantly the northern Nigerian culture.  In this painting, he focuses on young maidens who hawk for a living, the locally cultured milk known as “fura”.  They are seen conservatively dressed and their wares firmly balanced on their heads.  Umeh creates a sombre mood with deep shades of secondary colours.  Subtly embedded and on a closer look at painting number 2, he plays with the number three. Which significantly represents feminity, in this context as it can be seen in the three distinct maidens with their wares.
