Read moreThe artist intends this painting to serve as a visual chronicle to society. As society is continuously changing and in some sense evolving the need to preserve certain elements of that change (evolution) for posterity becomes imperative. The painting depicts local men preparing to take part at the Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival. The event was first held in 1934 as a celebration of peace and goodwill gesture between Sokoto and Argungu – two nations that had previously been engaged in savage internecine warfare. Today it marks one of the highlights of Nigeria’s cultural calendar…and the winner is always a FISH!
