Four Boats

Joe uses symbols to subjectively suggest some mystical ideas, emotions and mindset of this waterfront community. Four canoes appear beside these symbols to instigate a hidden meaning only to be discerned by “some wise” onlooker. The play of numbers (boats), positioning (boats) and the specific use of red, black and gray colours for the symbols makes a connection between the river, the people, their belief and preoccupation – an interesting subject in African culture and tradition.
