Read moreThe painting is titled “Zauzau” which was a famous ancient town in northern Nigeria ruled by a woman – Queen Amina. She ruled Zauzau in the early 16th century. Today the town is called Zaria in present day Kaduna State. With their backs to viewer/audience, the women seen in the painting make their way from the river (judging by the water pots on their heads) toward the “city gate”. The wall provided military protection for the community and also against incessant marauders and cattle rustlers who roamed the vast landscape and grasslands at the time.
