Yoruba griots use drums and music to usher in dignitaries to events – a form of praise singing that is part of the African culture for elites and highly placed citizens. Umeh’s impressionist approach is very direct and is focused on the subject – the drums.  The faces are immaterial but the number of the players is significant.  This suggests unity and the synchronization of the rhythm and melody produced by the drums.
