The Benin people are rich in culture and tradition. They flourished in art, craft and bronze works between the fifteenth and nineteenth  centuries.  The palace of the Oba is also embellished and furnished with symbolic items, replicas of their deities and past royals and other court artworks. However, this painting shows palace chiefs richly adorned and in procession to pay homage to the Oba.  Umeh gives a vivid impression of the rich tradition of a once prosperous and vibrant pre-colonial empire, the Benin Empire.
