Umeh’s reverence and respect for women in trade and their resourcefulness is portrayed in this painting.  A woman is seen carrying a tray of vegetables on her head – a more liberal outlook, presumably a culture in the south of Nigeria different from the Northern part of the country.  Her attire and the chicken in her hand also suggest this inclination or disposition.  Umeh uses secondary colours here to create the lively scenery of a busy market.
