Ogunnusi’s use of strong colours in this piece is a statement: an artistic ploy to stand out from the rest and be noticed. The other trick is to divide the painting into two halves – yellow and red. The day is hot and humid as suggested by the sky (all in yellow) and the sea is fiery red. The use of this metaphorical approach (red sea) to some viewers might seem a bit hyperbolic but in reality tells a different story altogether. The discerning viewer would have noticed the empty boats with hardly any catch. Ogunnusi uses red to highlight the difficult and barren times and the uncertain future that lies ahead.
