Culture and tradition are the central themes in Umeh’s extensive portfolio. In this painting, he gives an impressionist’s peek into the Eyo festival also known as the Adamu Orisha play.  A unique festival performed by masquerades dressed in white flowing costumes, wooden batons and hats.  Myth has it that these masquerades escort the souls of departed Lagos kings to the great beyond and also to usher in new ones. This popular annual festival attracts tourists and important dignitaries from far and wide to Lagos Island, the traditional home ground and location of the Oba’s palace.
