Lucky explores the Yoruba culture in the Bata dance.  The solo dancer in the painting is in full gyration as his Kembe swirls and spins in tandem with the beats of the Ilu Bata (or the Bata drums). The dance is an energetic, acrobatic and athletic performance commonly associated with the deity – Sango and is prominent in Yoruba land, Southwest of Nigeria.  Ancient history has it that the dance emerged out of the need to pacify and soothe a king with a fiery and tempestuous nature.  Bata dance is the pride of the Yoruba people and a reflection of their rich cultural values.
