Uche Obasi is from Abia State in the South Eastern part of Nigeria. Art has been innate in him even before he became fully conscious of it. Uche started drawing at the age of 5 and took up this path at 2013. He is a graduate of Communications Engineering from The Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) but inspired to the path of art, therefore putting aside the engineering profession.

A quote from Uche states, “I love to explore diverse styles and techniques, therefore, I undertook the journey of studying art history, the masters before me, the path art has taken and how it has evolved to what it is today. Armed with this information, I developed a style that seeks to pay tribute to the past, connect with the present and project what the future may hold. Thus, the art style “Wordism: was born. This style which is composed entirely of words seeks not just to please the sight of the viewer, but also to arouse curiosity and the spirit of discovery of what is within the work itself”.

Uche challenges the viewer/audience to try and solve the ‘puzzle’ by deciphering the words inscribed in his work.

He uses his works to address cultural and social issues as the range and potential of this style is yet to be fully exploited.

Uche lives and works in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
